Seminar: “Patent-Free Text Searching and Citation Searching”

Next Monday, February 7, 2011, the AIDB seminar “Patent Free-Text Searching and Citation Searching,” presented by Stephen Adams, will take place atthe University of Modena.

Admission to the event is free and reserved for AIDB members and students and staff of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The schedule will be as follows (10 a.m.–5 p.m., with a lunch break):

“Patent-free text search and citation search”
A) Citations:
Development of citation searching—legal, scientific, and patent
Different techniques for using citations: forward, backward, co-citation, and clustering
Sources and methods of citation in patent documents
Citation standards and their extraction into databases
The interface between patents and non-patent literature

B) Full text:
Early development of online bibliographic systems and their application to full-text
The body of a patent specification and the various types of information it contains
Challenges of searching patent full texts in particular
The unique challenges of searching patent claims
The impact of full text on our assessment of precision and recall
A brief overview of sources and distributors of full-text patent databases

Registration must be submitted to the AIDB Secretariat, including your tax ID number, in order to access the computers that the University of Modena will provide for the seminar (as required by internal regulations).

If the number of applications exceeds the number of available spots, placements will be made based on the chronological order in which applications are received, with priority given to the first applicant from each company or organization.
