AIDB Annual Conference 2011

Semantica & family – Risks and/or Opportunities of Automated Search Tools in the Google Era.
7th Annual Conference of the Italian Association of Patent Documentalists
Free admission. Italian/English with simultaneous translation.

The conference organized by the Italian Association of Patent Documentalists (AIDB) is the leading national event in the field of technical, scientific, and legal information—represented by the millions of patents that make up a vast, yet still underutilized, international archive.
The search for information and documentation—patents, scientific articles, and gray literature— appears to be moving away from traditional Boolean logic and shifting decisively toward the use of intelligent tools based on semantic logic—that is, tools capable of recognizing the conceptual relationships between words through somewhat mysterious algorithms, capable of locating documents of significant interest in less than a second. In this extraordinary landscape, professional researchers must be able to recognize the pitfalls and/or opportunities offered today by the science of information retrieval and update their skills; the same applies to all professionals involved in the patent information and documentation market in general.
But patent research for the rights derived from patents is a very sensitive matter—to what extent can we rely on a machine to carry it out? Where is scientific research in this sector headed, and how do existing systems work?
The Conference of the Italian Association of Patent Documentalists, now in its seventh edition and organized in collaboration with Sardegna Ricerche, aims to explore the world of semantic search in its various fascinating aspects, such as image recognition and chemical formula recognition, by showcasing some of the most distinguished national and international scientific institutions and hosting an original Semantic Contest in which AIDB members will present the results of an independent test conducted using tools currently available on the market.
International providers of databases and online information services—Infoapps, Dialog, STN/CAS/FIZ Karlsruhe, Patbase, Questel, and Thomson Reuters—will host workshops and exhibit booths over the course of the two-day event.
