Bernardo Nobile Award

On January 27, the Bernardo Nobile Award ceremony was held, organized by the AREA Science Park in Trieste and sponsored by AIDB.

Area Science Park is announcing its annual award for bachelor’s or doctoral theses that have highlighted the use of patents as a source of information.

The Award consists of three categories: one for master’s or specialized degree theses and one for doctoral dissertations that have explicitly used patents as a source of information; a third award is dedicated to master’s, specialized, or doctoral theses that have explicitly used patents as a source of information and whose results, studies, and/or research have led to the filing of a patent application or the creation of a new company.

The winners of the 17th edition are:

“Master’s or Specialized Degree Thesis” SECTION

Winner: Elena Oreglia

Thesis Title: “Patents and 5G Technology: An Empirical Analysis”

Polytechnic University of Turin – Master’s Degree Program in Management Engineering

Reasoning: The Commission awards the Prize to Elena Oreglia, whose extensive and varied research on the state of the art, her extensive analysis of international patent data using professional tools, with a focus on the specific category of SEPs (Standard Essential Patents), in order to identify characteristics useful for the development of a standard.

 

“Doctoral Dissertations” SECTION

Winner: Gianluca Biggi

Thesis Title: “Toxic Inventions: Geo-Temporal Dynamics and Firm-Level Strategies in the Chemical Industry”

University of Pisa – Doctoral School in Business Administration and Management

Reason: The Commission awards the Prize to Gianluca Biggi for his detailed description of a method for collecting and analyzing data—including patent data and beyond—and for his undeniable ability to propose innovative methods of analysis and correlation.

 

SECTION: “Master’s or Specialized Theses, or Doctoral Dissertations, whose findings, studies, and/or research have led to the filing of a patent application or the creation of a new company”

Winner: Sara Fioretti

Thesis Title: “Marine Organisms as Model Species for Assessing Biological, Environmental, and Economic Impacts on Marine Aquaculture in Campania”

University of Naples Federico II – Doctoral Program in Veterinary Sciences

Reason: The Commission awards the Prize to Sara Fioretti for her integration of various sources in

a rigorous methodology for utilizing information derived from intellectual property in a non-obvious context, with the aim of capitalizing on a technology for use in various settings.

  • Ennio Vizzini: Master’s Degree in Management Engineering—Computer Science Track at the Polytechnic University of Turin. Thesis Title: “The Evolution of Digital and Green Innovations Over the Last 20 Years: A Patent Analysis”;
  • Jacopo Cricchio: Master’s degree in International Studies from the University of Turin. Thesis title: “Building a Distinct Narrative? China’s IPR System and the TRIPS Agreement”;
  • Federico Scredo: Master’s Degree in Management Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin. Thesis Title: “Externalities, Knowledge Flows, and Green Innovation: An Empirical Analysis of Innovation Networks in Italy.”
• SECTION “Master’s or Specialized Theses, or Doctoral Dissertations, whose findings, studies, and/or research have led to the filing of a patent application or the creation of a new company”:
  • Franco Furlani, for his effective integration of scientific and patent literature in illustrating the state of the art on the topic of the dissertation. Ph.D. in Nanotechnology at the University of Trieste. Thesis title: “Molecular Properties of Chitosan and its Derivatives and their Potential for Biomedical Applications.”
